And Back Again
Feb. 14th, 2012 03:52 pmWhen they reached the Capital Wasteland, Ellen opened a door quietly and let Voodoo back into Milliways. They’d gotten as far as the end, after all. What he did from there she didn’t know, and doubted she’d ever find out. She had to finish the rest of her duties. Dave she saw back to his Republic, which had been running smoothly indeed under his elder wife’s governance in his absence. Disappointed as Rosie was to have to deal with her Brahmin-skulled husband again, she thanked Ellen most sincerely for her efforts, and sent her back to the Citadel with supplies and a signed trade agreement. The Brotherhood had more than upheld their end of the bargain, after all.
The news that one of Elder Lyons’ original contingent from California had survived in the Pitt, and been responsible (directly or indirectly) for so much of the slave trade’s drain on the people of the Wasteland, came as a horrible shock at the Citadel. Something, Elder Lyons said, would have to be done. The Brotherhood looked after its own- for good or for ill. But it had waited this long, and would have to wait longer. The plans for emptying Vault 87 once and for all had been in the works a long time, and would be implemented first. Freeing the Wasteland of the supermutant scourge was the only way to release Brotherhood manpower for future projects.
There were, of course, a few other subjects discussed at the Citadel. What had become of Paladin Renny, Ellen never found out- but the members of Lyons’ Pride agreed that nothing good ever became of a Paladin who sent one of her subordinates on an open-ended mission alone, with no support and no planning. Even Knight-Captain Gallows, who never spoke if he could help it, achieved a sort of spectacularly disapproving silence at the mention of Renny’s name. Ellen was glad of that, and of the time spent talking with Knight-Captain Colvin about the whole experience. In the absence of Reverend Avellone, Colvin was the only counselor or religious figure Ellen really trusted- even if most of their talks happened during sniper training instead of in an office somewhere.
Paladin Kodiak, she avoided. Kodiak had told her once he’d been taken from the Pitt as a baby during the original Scourge, and that his real name was Greg Bear. She didn’t want to take the chance of him seeing recognition in her face; he looked so very, very much like the Bear Brothers might have, had they grown up somewhere outside the Pitt’s contamination…
Oh, and there was the promotion. That one caught her by surprise, after everything that had happened. Maybe it shouldn’t have. She didn’t know. It was a little hard to feel much of anything at this point. The whole wretched mission, the whole wretched journey, had left her pretty numb.
Maybe it would be better once she got back to Megaton and her house there.
