Knight-Captain Gallows had opted to leave the starred shoulder pauldrons alone, but Ellen's armor bore the lion-and-gear insignia of Lyons' Pride on the chest as she clattered into the laboratory. Fawkes was already present, as was the rest of the Pride. "There you are," said Sentinel Lyons. "Ready to go?"

Ellen was grateful for the power helmet hiding her face. "As ready as I'll ever be, ma'am."

"Okay. Don't be nervous," said Lyons, not unkindly. "You'll have the whole Pride backing you up, not to mention this giant tin can."

Ellen spared a moment to look up at the robot; she'd seen it in passing on her arrival, and once or twice in the Citadel before, but never really gave it much attention. It stood a good forty feet tall, its arms and legs heavily armored, its torso more so. Its shoulders bore the same star insignia as her own pauldrons. Its head was virtually out of sight. All she could make out from where she stood was a gleam of red in the middle of a field of metal.

"Just stay safe until we reach the purifier," Lyons continued. "You're no good to us if you're dead. And don't let that thing step on you."

Ellen nodded, and Lyons turned away to face her other soldiers. "Okay," she said as Scribe Rothchild scurried past her to reach the robot's control terminal. "We're going to go over it one more time. The Pride is on me. The goal is Project Purity, but we can't get into the facility with those energy fields up. Rothchild and Li say this robot should be able to take down the energy fields, so we're on fire support. We stay close to the thing, keep clear, and get it to where it needs to go. Once the fields are down, we head straight for the facility. We'll use the robot to keep them occupied while we get inside and secure the control room. We need to move quickly, before we lose the chance to surprise them. Muster in the Bailey as soon as this thing is out of here and when we're done with this... everyone can have a nice, cold glass of water on me."

Lyons turned once more, this time towards the robot. "All right, Rothchild!" she called. "Fire it up!"

"Very well-"

The glimmer of red high atop the robot suddenly flared into brilliant life, and the robot spoke.

"LIBERTY PRIME IS ONLINE. ALL SYSTEMS: NOMINAL. WEAPONS: HOT. MISSION: THE DESTRUCTION OF ANY AND ALL CHINESE COMMUNISTS."

"Don't worry!" called Rothchild as the floor beneath the robot's feet began to lift it up through the roof. "I couldn't overcome that but it does know it's on our side!"

Oh, thought Ellen weakly, the ringing slowly clearing out of her ears. That's good.
