When the 'storm' doors are finally breached, they open onto a slanted passage. In times past, a conveyor belt allowed factory workers to move boxes and other heavy objects into storage below without having to navigate stairs or wait for an elevator to arrive. These days, the belt is gone, but crudely improvised hand and footholds indicate it's been converted into shallow stairs. The room beyond is large and pillared, lit here and there by battery-powered lamps.
Anyone with ears and a reasonable amount of discretion should be able to tell that the entrance is being guarded by people very, very carefully biding their time and taking aim.
