The Rad-field

aaaaaaaagh_skyIt’s still ticking. It’s still ticking.
There were ports in the Enclave armor for stimpak injections. They were big enough to shove a Med-X needle through, but Rad-Away only worked intravenously and if they were going to use it Ellen had to take her armor off and it was the only thing between her and the radiation around them and she was still ticking. The suit stayed on. The ticking continued.
It’s still ticking now. They’ve searched the area, they’ve looked for anything that could conceivably be an auxiliary door to the Vault, they’ve found nothing. Just the sea of dead mutants (oh, God, they weren’t like the others, how many of those things were halfway to Behemoths, what was this place), and the rad-field the size of Megaton. Cross thinks there’s a tunnel mouth in the rock on the far side of the rad-field but if Ellen so much as steps forward her Pip-Boy goes mad and the ticking blurs into one long crackle that sounds like fire and no. No. If that’s the door they’re not getting to it and if there’s an auxiliary door they don’t know where it is.
There are other things you can use a door for, though, and when Ellen can think again over the sound of the ticking (only the outside of the suit is hot, the inside is fine, there’s lead in there somewhere, there has to be, please let there be lead) she glances to Cross. They’ll find a door somewhere nearby. Some building. Some crashed car. Some gate in an ancient fence, something- the point is they’ll find a door and Cross will turn her back and someone on the other side will be able to help, somehow. It has to work. They’ve searched everywhere and there isn’t anything left and there’s not enough Rad-X in the world to get Ellen or Cross across that field alive let alone Rad-Away to clear them afterwards and that’s even assuming the door to 87 still opens but there has to be something-
Up ahead on the horizon a mole waves to them from an ancient, tattered billboard, welcoming all and sundry to the wonders of Lamplight Caverns.
