By the angle of the sun through the door, it's mid-morning in the Wasteland. Warm, too, by the feel of it. Ellen's wearing her skin-close black stealth suit and heavily reinforced overcoat from the Anchorage campaign anyway. "It'll be easier this time than last time," she says to Mark. "I moved the door." To Sariel she notes, "The nearest house with a door I can use for Milliways is about a quarter-mile from here. There's a closer building, but it's full of feral ghouls and I don't think we need to take that chance. The human beings on board the ship aren't comfortable with targeting the teleportation beam themselves, so we're going to a homing beacon the ship fired into the Wasteland some time ago. If we activate its signal while the ship is making its pass over the region, we should be good."

The landscape is rocky and dry; the last rains came through here a week ago. Nothing grows nearby but yellow-brown scrub. A pinkish, scabrous thing the size of a beagle, with the yellowing teeth of a gnawing rodent, is digging in the dirt not far off; it seems content to ignore the new arrivals.

Invincible looks around. The Capital Wasteland looks pretty much the same as it did the last time he looked around, brown and dry. He stares at the giant mole rat for a minute or so while Ellen is explaining things, then turns and greets his fellow traveler. "Hi," he says, extending a hand, "I'm called Invincible. California, Earth, 2003."

Sariel... is going to take a second to acclimate fully, say sorry. This is a woman used to genuinely alien landscapes, yes, but this is also someone who grew up on a literally tropical island. The vegetation or lack of it, not to mention the pinkish--what is that, anyway?--is giving her a little pause.

Eventually, her attention returns to Ellen and her fellow traveler. "Feral... I probably don't want to know details on those, do I? Understood, though." Beat. "Sariel Rager, 2370, and either Saint Lucia on Earth or the Federation starship Enterprise, depending on duty and shoreleave. Good to meet you." She accepts Invincible's hand, and does not comment on his name.

"None here, but I've been up there already," says Invincible. "Are we trying for an evacuation of the ship, or some other plan?"

"No questions at the moment," Sariel answers, "given what you've already told me." The feral ghouls thing she's leaving weeeeell alone now she has the details, say thankya. As for careless? Nah. There being comparatively lots of information to cover about the wasteland about, well, covers it. It has nothing to do with Sariel-mun failing, nopenope, we swear, reeeeeally.

Sariel's eyes are on that crater as they descend toward the homing beacon. That is, until they hit the beacon itself.

"Protection I can do," Invincible replies confidently. He follows Ellen down into the crater. "How long's it been since we last visited Dr. Tercorien?"

"You were able to figure out the necessary controls at speed," Sariel points out, Ellen-wards. Credit where it's due, you know. "Given a little time, I'll hopefully be able to figure out some of the finer details."

The mention of hostiles? Oh yes, that's tautened something in her face, just a little. Call it the tiniest of further edges to already sharp attention.

"I can imagine," says Invincible, nodding. "I mean, it's like a tomb in there, only with chrome and weird lights. Still, every person we can wake up is another person that isn't in there, making it creepy."

"Hey," he adds, suddenly, "can you tell who is who in there? Maybe there's some other doctors that could help. Not that you don't know your field," he adds, "but more trained professionals is good, right?"

"Mooing?" Invincible grins and shakes his head. "Wow, the crazies were right; they were abducting cattle."

"Well," he continues, "I suppose then that the best plan is to start with either the most recent or someone who looks to be from a year recent enough to speak English or at least be civilized. Thawing a Pict or a Spartan is likely to end up with violence."

He looks around. "Are the cylinders sorted in some order? Chronological would be good."

Invincible thinks for a minute. "Well, it sounds like the oldest ones are the most risky to thaw out, if their vitals are that low. So, more recent would probably be safer and surer, both because they're more likely to understand us and more likely to survive."

"Or we could try for someone closer to your era," he adds. "They might be more likely to believe you. Unless they were, you know, Chinese."

That gets a momentary chuckle out of Sariel, though she stifles it quickly. The levity, such that it is, seems to help a little. In some situations, you take what you can get.

Sariel follows in Sally's wake, if a little girl can be said to have a wake to follow in, and that leads her to - "Oh. I had thought those were escape pods or shuttles of some sort, just from the appearance. But if they symbolize the ship itself..." She doesn't touch the death ray's or the shields' controls, but she is looking more closely at them. "That sounds--" how to put this? "--similar to something else I've seen before."

Very recently, in fact. You can't use certain starship systems with shields at maximum either. Transporters, for one.

"That makes sense," Sariel says quietly, though she doesn't elaborate on just how. To be honest, Sariel doesn't like to think about exactly how herself; placing weapons and engineering systems in a smaller area of the ship makes good tactical sense, for all she's no tactical officer. And given what this ship's been used for...

It's disturbing, thinking about this ship's original company's reasoning, ship design or... otherwise. Better to stick with the results of the reasoning instead.

"The settings progress from there?" Sariel asks, though she's fairly sure she knows the answer, from the look of the other two saucery shapes. "This one being the highest weapon strength and the least shielding?" One hand gestures at the relevant hologram.

Calling the associated weapon a death ray might take a second yet.

Not much at all, no. Part of Sariel commiserates, say true, though another part of her is bothered by that fact. Vengeance is unbecoming a Starfleet officer. ... But humanoid is as humanoid does. Or feels without doing.

Sariel isn't going to respond aloud to Sally's enthusiasm, but she will look for the targeting controls over to one side. "Here?" She's still keeping hands off. "Or do these belong to another system?"

A glance goes dutifully to the other side, locates the targeting controls, then flicks back to the mystery panel. "I have to confess," Sariel says, "that I've never seen Captain Cosmos. Everything I know about it, I've learned from Ellen." Oh if she only knew...

Pause. Excuse her for a second, Sally, but Sariel's just going to take a closer look at those mystery controls for a minute. "This almost looks like it might be linked to shuttles or escape craft, given the design. I could be wrong, though; I was before."
